A framework-agnostic UI Design system

Led the creation of a framework agnostic design system which can be applied to a portfolio of various products ranging from CX suites, communications and asset management applications

Project visuals

In 2022, the UX team, after consultation with a few senior developers, decided to implement Material UI + ReactJS as the front-end framework in order to standardize front-end code and components for new projects. The UI components were based on Material Design 2.

Observation

We observed it unless product teams were planning on rewriting the front-end stack, and in some cases the entire stack they couldn’t come around to utilizing React and Material UI.

This caused broken attempts at making existing products look and behave like Material UI. Besides some primary colours, there was no proper consistency with the specific components themselves.

It was clear we had to evolve and simplify the Design System in order to make it work.

It could not be tied to a complicated framework which would require a novice developer to learn. The UX team treated this like building a project.
